Best embroidery machines

People like to take on a lot of hobbies that involve their creativity. In fact, the vast majority of us have some sort of hobby that begins somewhere in our creative side of the brain. While some prefer music and painting, others like to create beautiful things with their hands. Such an activity can be embroidery. It has been around for hundreds of years, but today’s techniques differ. Now, we have embroidery machines, something that made traditional embroidery obsolete. It has definitely made things easier and more accurate, which is why we can all agree that embroidery is not as intricate as it used to be.

What is an embroidery machine and why people use it?

Embroidery is a technique that uses multiple colored stitches to create patterns on different kinds of fabric. It is something that can be customized according to your taste. In the past, embroiders used their hands to form the said patterns, which was very intricate and time-consuming work. An embroidery machine, on the other hand, makes things last a lot less, and the process is not as elaborate.

While some people use an embroidery machine to create decorative pieces, other like to use it to personalize their clothes. That way, your clothes do not look as unoriginal as most. For example, if you buy a pair of jeans that everyone wears, you can use an embroidery machine and make them look unique. You can make all your clothes look genuine and not mass-produced. Plus, you have to admit that embroidery can bring more value to your clothes. You may have noticed that embroidered clothes cost more in stores.

Types of embroidery machines

As you can imagine, there is more than one type of embroidery machines. You may prefer one above the other, depending on what your purposes are. With that in mind, there are three kinds of embroidery machines.

The combined sewing/embroidery machine

This type of machine is quite common, mostly because it serves multiple purposes. You can use it as a sewing machine to make clothes or fix different things in your closet, but you can also use it for actual embroidery. They come in single and multiple-needle models. The point is that as long as you need some thread and a needle, this type of machine can handle pretty much anything.

The single-needle embroidery machine

The second type of device is the single-needle model. Just as the name suggests, it has a single needle as opposed to multiple. It is the most basic design of an embroidery machine, but it is still able to do the work. It is pretty easy to use, and you should have an easy time learning. Plus, depending on the model, you can create computer designs. The needle will stay stationary at all times, and the embroidery arm does all the work.

The multi-needle embroidery machine

If you are looking for something more professional, then a multi-needle embroidery machine is what you need. This type of device can have up to 10 needles, and each of them is in charge of a color. You can switch between colors as you like, which is not possible with a single-needle embroidery unit. You do not have to replace the color altogether. All you have to do is switch the needle.

Multi-needle embroidery machines are also very fast since they can run at a speed of 400 to 1000 stitches. They are versatile, mainly because they can hold two points of hoop attachments.

How many types of embroidery are there?

To answer your question, there are two types of embroidery. The first one is the free-motion embroidery. You can control the direction of the machine however you please, and the device will allow you. It requires some talent, as you may expect, but if you have it, you do not have to rely on a computer to tell you the direction of the machine, the needle size, or the stitching. It may be difficult to learn at first, but once you get the hang of it, you will be able to say that you have a new valuable skill. Not everyone can do it.

The second embroidery is the computerized one. It does precisely what it sounds. Machines that allow computerized embroidery are more expensive, but they will enable you to make your own designs on a computer, and then they will recreate it with thread. Some embroidery machines allow you to use pre-loaded cards with your favorite patterns.

What to consider when looking for the best embroidery machine

Before you spend your money on an embroidery machine, you need to consider all the aspects. An embroidery machine is not the cheapest item, which is why you need to be careful what you are buying. Here is what you need to take into consideration.

  • Type – as I told you above, there are three types of embroidery machines. You need to determine which one you want or need the most. If you need a machine for general use, then a sewing/embroidery device might be in order. That way you can make the best of it. If you are interested only in embroidery or if you already have a sewing machine, then you should go for embroidery only, free-motion or computerized. The choice is yours, but keep in mind that the latter is more expensive.
  • Ease of use – embroidery in itself is not the easiest skill to learn, which is why if you are a beginner, I would not recommend a multi-needle embroidery machine. It is a tough machine to learn how to use, and your experience has a big say in it. That is why my advice is to start small with a single-needle embroidery machine so that you can learn and improve your skills in time. Sure, the features are limited, but once you get the hang of it, you can opt for a more intricate and expensive machine.
  • Mind the throat width – throat width is the distance between the needle and the machine’s body. The bigger the gap, the easier the machine is to use. That is because devices with a small throat width always require you to adjust the cloth that is about to get embroidered, and that can get frustrating at some point.
  • Hoop size – this is yet another significant factor that you need to consider when making a purchase. Hook sizes can vary from 100 x 100 to 360 x 350. Your choice depends on the projects you have in mind. The larger the project, the larger the hook needs to be.
  • Digitized software – if you are already initiated in embroidery, you may want to look for an embroidery machine that allows you to edit your designs. Some models come with that feature, and while you spend more money, you are able to create more complicated and interesting patterns. Some machines come with a card slot so that you can upload your designs.

What are the best embroidery machines?

There may be a few other things to consider when buying an embroidery machine, but I think you caught the most important ones. Also, my advice is to read some embroidery machines reviews online so that you can make sure that your choice is the best. You could also choose one of the models you will see below.
